A classic Mercedes-Benz restoration is never simply about bringing a car back to life. It is about preserving its character, respecting its history and paying attention to every detail — including the luggage that accompanies it.
When the restoration of this 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was nearing completion, its owner wanted to add one final element: a bespoke set of luggage inspired by the fitted cases originally created for the model.
During the golden age of European grand touring, luggage was considered an integral part of the automobile. Mercedes-Benz offered fitted luggage for several of its most prestigious models, including the 190 SL, 300 SL, Pagoda and 280 SE.
Designed around the dimensions of each luggage compartment, these cases made the best possible use of the available space while complementing the elegance of the vehicle.
For this 1961 Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, the objective was therefore not simply to manufacture three suitcases. The new luggage had to feel as though it had always belonged with the car.
Our work began with the selection of premium cowhide leather chosen to harmonise with the restored upholstery. The colour, texture and finish were carefully considered so that the luggage would become a natural continuation of the interior.
This three-piece luggage set for the Mercedes-Benz 190 SL was handcrafted to fit the trunk perfectly, following the proportions and visual character of period luggage.
Inside, a tartan lining brings warmth and character to the set. This traditional fabric recalls the interiors found in many luxury suitcases of the period and creates an elegant contrast with the leather exterior.
Each element contributes to the overall balance of the collection: the handles, straps, piping, metal fittings and internal compartments. Together, these details transform the suitcases into more than practical travel accessories. They become part of the car’s story.
Every classic car has its own dimensions, materials and history. This is why each Laurent Nay luggage project is developed individually according to the vehicle and the wishes of its owner.
Leather colour, tartan lining, stitching, piping, fittings and personalisation can all be selected to coordinate with the car. The result is a unique set of bespoke automotive luggage, handcrafted in our workshop near Vichy, France.
We would like to thank the Club Mercedes-Benz 190 SL France and its members for their valuable support and assistance throughout this project. Their knowledge and passion help preserve the history of these remarkable automobiles.
