Recreating Bespoke Luggage for a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE

Discover how Laurent Nay Maroquinerie recreated a four-piece coated-canvas luggage set inspired by original Karl Baisch designs for the trunk of a restored 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE.

Some projects become more than commissions. Over time, the owner of this beautiful 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE became a friend, brought together with our workshop by a shared passion for classic cars, craftsmanship and the smallest details that make a restoration truly complete.

A devoted Mercedes-Benz enthusiast, Jacques has restored several remarkable automobiles over the years. For his 220 SE, he wanted to complete the car with a fitted luggage set inspired by the original configuration found in the Mercedes-Benz accessories catalogue of the period.

Recreating the original Mercedes-Benz luggage configuration

The objective was precise: to recreate a set of four suitcases designed specifically for the trunk of the 1958 Mercedes-Benz 220 SE.

Each case had to follow the proportions and character of the original period luggage while making the best possible use of the available space. Once positioned inside the trunk, the four suitcases form a harmonious and perfectly fitted collection.

Recreating this set involved much more than adapting the dimensions of contemporary luggage. The construction, materials and individual components all had to reflect the authentic character of the original design.

Reproducing the Karl Baisch-style coated canvas

One of the greatest challenges was recreating the distinctive coated canvas associated with Karl Baisch-style automotive luggage.

Working closely with a French textile manufacturer, we developed a coated canvas that captures the appearance and character of the original material. This was an essential part of the project, as the canvas gives the suitcases their immediately recognisable period style.

Several other components also had to be specially developed. A specific extruded rubber profile was reproduced for the protective edges, while custom metal parts were manufactured to achieve a coherent finish throughout the set.

The handles, retaining straps and labels were handcrafted in matching leather, creating an elegant contrast with the coated canvas.

Four suitcases handcrafted to fit the trunk

Using the original plans as a reference, each suitcase was constructed on a lightweight poplar plywood frame.

The four cases were individually designed to fit precisely inside the trunk of the Mercedes-Benz 220 SE. Every available space was considered to provide generous storage capacity while preserving the visual balance of the complete set.

Inside, the suitcases are lined with tartan fabric. This traditional lining recalls the atmosphere of period travel goods and brings warmth and character to the interior of each case.

Once installed, the four suitcases appear to be a natural extension of the car: practical travel companions designed in harmony with its materials, proportions and history.

When historical research meets French craftsmanship

This project perfectly illustrates what bespoke automotive luggage represents to Laurent Nay Maroquinerie.

It involves understanding the vehicle, researching period designs and developing technical solutions when original materials or components are no longer available. Textile development, leatherwork, cabinetmaking, metalwork and precise fitting all come together to create luggage that feels inseparable from the automobile.

Handcrafted in our workshop near Vichy, France, this bespoke Mercedes-Benz 220 SE luggage set respects the spirit of the original model while offering the quality and durability of contemporary craftsmanship.

Thank you, Jacques, for your trust, your involvement and your invaluable help throughout this special project.
